AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals, DSM, Google and Philips have started receiving power from the Bouwdokken wind farm in the Netherlands – a milestone achievement resulting from a unique green energy purchasing consortium they jointly established. Today we announced important investments in China to support the country’s increasing demand for high-performance polymers and grow alongside its customers in one of the world’s fastest growing polymer markets. At its site in Jiaxing, Nouryon has completed a capacity expansion for metal alkyls production, which will ultimately double its ability to produce triethylaluminum, a co-catalyst essential in the manufacture of polyethylene and polypropylene for packaging, automotive components and consumer goods.

Nouryon has signed a long-term agreement with Arauco to supply essential sodium chlorate and chlorine dioxide solutions for Arauco’s new $4.6 billion pulp mill in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. As part of the agreement, Nouryon will construct fully integrated sodium chlorate and chlorine dioxide manufacturing facilities in Mato Grosso do Sul, leveraging its technology and integrated manufacturing model expertise to enhance its leading market positions in South America, particularly Brazil, as a key supplier for the pulp and paper industry. Nouryon will own and operate the sodium chlorate facility – which will increase its industry-leading South America capacity in Brazil by 20% and globally by almost 10% - and engineer, construct and operate the Arauco chlorine dioxide plant. Pulp mill production is scheduled to start in late 2027.

A look back at the chemical industry in innovation terms clearly shows that there have been two significant eras of development. The first, which dates back to the early 1800s, involved the development of products such as paints or soaps that could be derived from natural oils and minerals.

A pioneering project that started in Nouryon’s bleaching chemicals operations in Brazil has shown how measuring the true impact of our operations on human, social, and natural capital can point to improvements that offer big sustainability benefits. The process is now being applied more widely across our company and is helping us create additional business value.
