The role of Melt Flow Index (MFI) in the polymer industry

MFI is a measurement used to assess the flowability or melt viscosity of polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE).

Polyolefins processability and applications are related to the MFI. For instance, in order to produce thin wall cups or buckets, injection molding can be used; this technology requires a relative fluid polymer in order to be able to fill the mold completely at a good speed in order to maximize production.

The Melt Flow Index is directly related to the molecular weight of PP/PE. Long polymer chains (high Molecular Weight) lead to high viscosity therefore low MFI.
