AkzoNobel leads an initiative with DSM, Google and Philips to buy green power from Bouwdokken wind farm

17 Jan 2017 - News

Amsterdam, January 17, 2017 – AkzoNobel is leading a consortium of companies, including DSM, Google and Philips, in signing a multi-year contract for the purchase of wind power from Bouwdokken Wind Park.

Following the consortium’s earlier announcement of a collaboration to build the Krammer Wind Park in the Dutch province of Zeeland, the parties have now also agreed to buy electricity from the new Bouwdokken Wind Park, also in Zeeland. The nine turbines in this wind park, each with a capacity of 4.2 MW, are currently being built on the artificial island Neeltje Jans. They are scheduled to be operational in the first quarter of 2018.

The Krammer and Bouwdokken wind parks have a total capacity of over 140 MW, enough to power approximately 140,000 households. "This marks the next big step toward a new way of supplying energy for the leading industry in the Netherlands," said Marcel Galjee on behalf of the four companies in the consortium. "We are demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and shaping a future without CO2."

In the Netherlands, an Energy Agreement between the government and companies aims to reduce CO2 emissions by using 14% renewable energy by 2020. By 2050, CO2 emissions should be reduced to zero.

AkzoNobel and the other three consortium members decided to examine the potential for cooperation in 2014, and have since embedded sustainable energy into their common long-term strategy.

E-Connection established Bouwdokken Wind Farm on the dams of the former Bouwdokhavens on the Neeltje Jans in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Eight of the planned nine turbines are currently built. These each have a capacity of 4.2 MW, and starting in the spring of 2018, they will all together produce 128.6 GWh of electricity annually. This is comparable to the average annual electricity consumption of approximately 42,000 households. Bouwdokken Wind Park utilizes the unique combination of the Oosterschelde: water barrier, nature, wind energy and recreation.

The wind farm and grid connection are owned by E-Connection. Wind Cooperation Zeeuwind is a 25% shareholder of the wind farm. E-Connection develops, builds and manages the wind farm. The foundations and access roads are to be built by GMB Civil. The wind turbines will be delivered, installed and maintained by Enercon. The network connection is established by Joulz Energy Solutions, in cooperation with Delta Infra BV. For more information, visit www.windparkbouwdokken.nl or follow the construction via @Bouwdokken.

AkzoNobel leads a consortium including DSM, Google and Philips in a unique collaboration in the Netherlands. In 2014, they entered into a long term agreement to jointly buy energy from renewable energy projects. Through the consortium, they can jointly explore opportunities in the field of renewable energy procurement. This new approach could lead to new ways for sustainable projects to increase financing from banks and equity investors, and help to realize the construction of new wind farms.

E-Connection initiates, implements and manages complex and innovative wind energy projects in sync with their evnironments. E-Connection has several wind farms in Zeeland and on the Oosterschelde barrier, managed from its Kamperland offices. They also conduct innovative and supportive research promoting the use of wind energy. E-Connection acts as an investor on behalf of investors in wind farms and works with a core of professionals, bringing together all disciplines required for wind projects.
