The Section Manager Product Chemistry (PC) manages a highly technical team of chemists and chemical engineers in the development and synthesis of new surfactant products and chelating agents, and improved manufacturing processes. In addition, the PC group supports various Application Research and Development teams, the health safety and environmental department, the technology team and production. New products and processes are developed and deployed into routine manufacturing at multiple production locations. The Section Manager is also responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of multiple autoclave reactors.

About the job

 

In your role as a Section Manager of Product Chemistry, you will be responsible for creating a safe and attractive work environment for employees. In this environment, mutually agreed-upon challenging goals that contribute to the company's objectives will be established. You will also ensure the proper employability and development of employees.

The product group is one of a network of synthesis groups in Nouryon located in Netherlands, USA, Sweden and Finland. As the section manager of the Deventer location, it is expected that a general understanding of the capabilities of other locations is maintained, and a network developed and utilized to improve the product chemistry group. Creating and fostering a mentality of 'center of expertise' within the group is part of this role.

 

In your future role as Section Manager Product Chemistry, you will

 

Workflow Management

  • Oversee daily operations of the Product Chemistry Group for surfactants and chelating agents.
  • Plan, prioritize, and report work in alignment with business strategy.
  • Manage workflow from various regional stakeholders for product synthesis and process improvement, setting deadlines, and staying within budget.

Laboratory Maintenance and Safety

  • Ensure the safe and compliant operation of the laboratories.
  • Manage chemical storage and inventory according to strict safety standard.
  • Review and revise safety processes for high-temperature and high-pressure operations.
  • Technical Expertise and Knowledge Sharing.
  • Collect and share expert knowledge on chemical synthesis, organic chemistry, and chemical engineering.
  • Support patent positions, manufacturing process changes, and customer quality requests.
  • Coordinate and assemble teams for complex technical questions, though not responsible for final decisions.

Team Development

  • Coach, develop, and attract scientists and project managers.
  • Implement technical processes into routine production.
  • Understand manufacturing capabilities, technical limitations, and regulatory compliance.
  • Optimize molecular structure for specific market applications through training and experience.
  • Ensure business needs are met and maintain a robust knowledgebase with backup structures.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Lead or participate in cross-functional teams for new product introductions.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, technology, health and safety, marketing, analytical, and supply chain functions.

 

 We believe you bring

 

  • PhD/Master degree, preferably in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering.
  • In-depth knowledge of organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, chemical engineering, with 7-10 years of relevant experience.
  • Leadership and managerial skills

 

Great if you have

 

  • Familiarity with chemical manufacturing and scale-up operations
  • Experience with surfactant, polymer, chelating agent production.
  • Experience with pressurized reaction conditions.
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
