About the Thesis work

Expancel® Microspheres is a lightweight filler and blowing agent all in one. Its incredible performance opens a world of possibilities. It is a simple concept – a small thermoplastic microsphere encapsulating a gas. Add heat and the gas expands while the shell softens giving a dramatic increase in volume.

Stability of emulsion is one of the main concerns in fabrication of Expancel® microsphere. It is necessary to have a good/sufficient stability to use the emulsion systems in different applications. This essential characteristic is defined as the system's ability to resist changes in its physicochemical properties over time.

This focus of the work is to investigate the impact of different factors on the stability of emulsion using a metal hydroxide particle as the main stabilizing agent.

The project:

This project aims to experimental investigation of emulsion systems stabilized with a certain metal hydroxide particle. To complete project, the following steps are considered:

  • Literature survey
  • Emulsion system fabrication and polymerization
  • Effect of different factors on emulsion systems
  • Characterization
  • Reporting

The project will be carried out at the Expancel R&D facilities of Nouryon in Sundsvall. An industrial supervisor will be provided from one of our scientists.

Preferred time period: Spring 2025 (~20 weeks)
