Sr. Transportation & Packaging Specialist

 

About The Job:

 

The Product Packaging Engineer will support packaging processes for established Nouryon products. Develop specifications for new product packaging with appropriate service providers.  Be familiar with multimodal transportation of hazardous materials, knowledge of chemical compatibilities; AutoCAD; and regulatory requirements for hazmat containers.

 

In Your Future Role as a Sr. Transportation & Packaging Specialist, You Will:

 

  • Experience working with hazardous materials, and a full understanding of the packaging requirements according to the regulations for bulk and non-bulk containment function and transportation. 
  • Utilization of AutoCAD to provide specification for classified containers.
  • Collaborate to identify and implement packaging process improvement projects.
  • Design, develop and review specifications for a wide variety of packaging used for the protection, containment, and handling of Nouryon products. Design packaging considering such factors as product identification, appropriate specifications for modal use, as well as modal restrictions.
  • Determine packaging specifications according to the nature of the product, cost limitations, legal requirements, and the type of protection required, considering need for resistance to such external variables as moisture, corrosive chemicals, temperature variations, light, heat, rough handling, and tampering
  • Provide cross-business technical and specification support to enable maintenance, leasing, and new construction of bulk containers (rail/road/vessel) and non-bulk hazardous materials containers.
  • Create technical documents and gather information critical to support new business opportunities.
  • Create Internal Corporate (PHES) specifications for equipment already under lease that is not already covered by existing specifications.
  • Creation and management of change requests within the Logistics Management of Change process.
  • Conduct customer design review process to ensure compliance to regulatory and technical requirements while allowing the company to capture new business.
  • Collaborate on documentation of approved/appropriate assembly configurations for all fleets. (Bulk and Non-Bulk)
  • Develop maintenance instructions for all fleets in service.
  • Conduct Process FMEAs (Failure mode and effects analysis).  Be able to conduct root cause analysis should failures occur;  identify failure and create plan to return assets to service.
  • Create fleet inspection and modification program to ensure safety and regulatory compliance for bulk assets.
  • Assist with onboarding new maintenance vendors when requested by business and procurement partners
  • Perform on-site interior and exterior inspections to ensure compliance with strict external and internal requirements for bulk transportation equipment
  • Upgrade and maintain bulk and non-bulk fleet specification documents with business contacts, managers, with pictures, descriptions, specifications, and proper application techniques to ensure proper sealings, and eliminate non-accidental releases (NARs).
  • Maintain certification in  “Preparing Hazardous Materials/Dangerous Goods for Transportation by Multiple Modes”
  • Maintain and assist business with procurement and maintenance of high hazard cylinder fleet.  Develop packaging designs and create packaging specifications according to DOT/PHMSA and non-DOT Cylinders in AutoCAD for identified products.
  • May supervise or provide work direction to other engineers and technicians.
  • May lead or serve as member of cross-functional project teams.
  • Support all Nouryon Chemicals initiatives as identified by management and in support of  Transportation Safety and Compliance;  Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality Management Systems (HSEQ), and other domestic and international regulatory requirements.
  • Complies with DOT (FRA/PHMSA/FMCSA), other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

 

 We Believe You Bring:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging Engineering or Mechanical Engineering OR an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Minimum 5 years in packaging or material handling.
  • Hazardous Materials/Chemical industry experience preferred.
  • Understanding of D.O.T., IMO, IATA and ISO guidelines.
  • Requires ability to be innovative, resourceful, and work with minimal direction.
  • Requires excellent organization, problem solving, and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred.
  • Experience working with multimodal packaging for transportation
  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
  • Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.
  • Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner. Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail. Ability to travel, including internationally.

This is a permanent position on a full-time basis, reporting to the Transportation and Distribution Safety Manager based in Houston, TX.
