About the job  

 

  • The Chief Technician is responsible for the overall operation of the sodium chlorate production process unit during the work shift.
  • In addition to the operation of the sodium chlorate production process unit, the Chief Technician is also generally responsible for the overall plant site during non-traditional work hours when other production department management is absent (i.e., evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, etc.).  This includes informing supervision or management of critical adverse changes in plant operations as necessary, monitoring of the plant-site egress, and acting as Incident Commander during emergencies until other plant management personnel arrive on site.
  • With the support of the Senior Production Engineer, the Chief Technician ensures that established goals, policies, and procedures in such areas as safety, health, environmental, quality, production, and human relations are implemented and adhered to as applicable within the Chief Technician's defined scope of responsibility and authority.
  • The Chief Technician works with and under the direction of the Senior Production Engineer to meet department objectives and requirements.
  • With the support and direction of the Senior Production Engineer, the Chief Technician is responsible for optimizing the chlorate plant performance.  This includes optimizing acid usage, caustic usage, nitrogen usage, power usage, and production.

 


In your future role as “ Chief Technician,” you will 

 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Supervise, coordinate, and/or execute activities pertaining to the production area during the work shift as necessary to maintain overall production department objectives and requirements.
  • Document and communicate critical information relative to plant operation.  This includes such items as logbook entries, operating log sheets, informative shift changes, operating reports, various permits, customer complaints, and applicable AIR’s and P/CAR’s.
  • Monitor and control the process via the Bailey DCS and other in-plant controls.  Evaluate analytical and process data affecting process operations and take preventative or corrective action as necessary.
  • Coordinate the interaction and requirements of maintenance and production activities utilizing a cooperative, team approach.  This includes such items as writing and approving permits, granting permission for activation of approved Bailey DCS changes, writing work orders, documenting activities and events occurring during the shift, performing inspections, and other similar activities.
  • Develop reports, collect data, and evaluate key plant operating parameters.  Develop trends and graphs, routing air-flow measurements, review, and participate in establishing PM frequencies.
  • Assist in the evaluation and testing of new projects and experiments.  Prepare PCR’s as required.  
  • With the assistance of the maintenance department, the Chief Technician is responsible for equipment care and condition monitoring with the goal of preventing equipment failures.
  • Handle and work around hazardous materials, and maintain any necessary certifications as required.
  • Overtime work hours will sometimes be required in order to meet production department needs.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as required.  Some of these events will not be possible to be scheduled during the normally scheduled shift working hours. 
  • Perform various tasks related to the plant utility systems as required by supervision.
  • Assist the loaders during regular hours as requested or needed to meet production and shipping requirements.  Complete loading activities (e.g., loading tank cars, tank trucks, hopper cars, and dumping salt) during off-hours to meet production and shipping requirements.

 

Supervision Responsibilities:

 

  • Work with other personnel on shift, forming a shift team that is capable of satisfactorily maintaining normal plant operations, but prepared to take proper action during abnormal plant operations or emergencies.  (An example of such action is firefighting, but only to the response level qualified or trained).
  • Responsible for maintaining a positive and professional work environment in all activities relating internal and external to the department. This includes such issues as personnel relations, discouraging any form of harassment, exemplifying a role of leadership, maintaining proper communications, and supporting management objectives.
  • Assist the Senior Production Engineer as requested in maintaining and adjusting production department work/shift schedules.  This may include scheduling additional or replacement personnel as required and assigning specific tasks as necessary.

 

Safety Responsibilities:

 

  • Responsible for the safe operation of the sodium chlorate production unit during the work shift.
  • First-line responsibility for the safety of personnel working within the operating plant area and the environment.
  • Responsible for making safety-related decisions during the work shift and ensuring that safety requirements are adhered to and maintained.
  • Support, administer, and/or execute all applicable Safety, Health, and Environmental policies and procedures during the work shift.

 

Quality Responsibilities:

 

  • Responsible for making quality-related decisions during the work shift and ensuring that required product quality is maintained.
  • Support, administer, and/or execute all applicable requirements of the Total Quality Program and Quality Assurance System during the work shift.
  • Responsible for assisting the Senior Production Engineer in making and implementing changes in the Total Quality Program.

Education and/or Experience:

 

  • Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or four years plus of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Language Skills:

 

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 

Mathematical Skills:

 

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

Reasoning Ability:

 

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. 
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

 

  • Washington Driver's License

 

Other Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Ability to utilize the Bailey DCS, including interpretation of audible/visual alarms and typewritten reports generated by the DCS, is required.  
  • Ability to operate and use personal computers and in-plant software is preferred.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

  
Compensation Information

 

The hiring salary range for this position ranges from $59,000 to $84,000, although individuals may eventually progress through the pay scale in this role up to $109,400 Actual compensation will be dependent upon the specific role as well as the individuals’ qualifications, experience, skills, and certifications. 

Employees (and their families) will be eligible for medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance. Employees are also eligible to enroll in our company’s 401k plan. Employees will also receive paid time off and the mandated company holidays throughout the calendar year.
